Get The Bridal Look You Deserve

Wedding makeup is not just about the makeup itself; it needs to start with a good skincare routine. Assuming you want your makeup to apply well, last all day, and look incredible, first look at what you are currently doing with your skin. If you are not sure where to start or haven't even had a skincare routine before, grabbing a copy of my Bridal Beauty Guide will start you off.

The key skincare products you want to consider are:

  • Cleanser (day and night)

  • Exfoliating (weekly)

  • Targeted Serum (daily)

  • Eye cream (daily)

  • Moisturiser (daily suitable for your skin type)

Once you have your skincare routine in place, you can start thinking about and creating the bridal style that suits you and will enhance your features and skin tones.

When considering the colours that will suit you, you want to consider your hair tone, eye colour, and skin lor. The makeup should be in harmony, coming together as one rather than having certain colours stand out more than the others.

Enhancing your eye colour and making them pop will be determined by the shades you apply. You want the colours to be flattering and bring a sparkle to your eyes rather than appear dull and tired. Here is a guideline on the best shades, depending on your eye colour:

Brown Eyes:

If you have brown eyes, you are very lucky, as you can pull off most shades. If you really want your eyes to pop, try Copper, Gold shades, Deep Mauves, Pinks, Purples and Dark Browns. If your brown eyes have gold flecks, try using a shadow with Gold Shimmer to compliment this.

Blue/Grey Eyes:

To make blue/grey eyes pop, opt for Browns, Earth Tones, Greys/Silver, Lilac, Soft Peaches, Rose-coloured shades, and Burnt Orange along with Coppers and Deep Golds.

Green/Hazel Eyes:

Dusky Pinks, Deep Plums, Burgundy, Grey, and Mauves work very well with this eye colour. If you would prefer a more natural effect, try Warm Brown shades (with Orange undertones) i.e. a Mocha Brown would work nicely for this. Other shades of this eye colour include Earthy tones with hints of Gold, Browns and Copper. Most people with this eye colour tend to have flecks of other colours in the eye, so this is a great positive as you are able to experiment with different shades.

But it is not only your eye colour that you need to consider when choosing your eyeshadow. You also need to factor in whether you have a "warm," "cool,” or “neutral” skin tone. This is determined in a few different ways. If you tan, suit gold jewellery more than silver, and generally have green veins on your wrist, you are defined as having a “warm” skin tone. If silver jewellery is more complementary to your tone, you burn easily and have blue veins; you have a “cool” skin tone. If you wear both types of jewellery and have a mix of green and blue veins, you have a “neutral” skin tone.

How does this affect your eyeshadow choice? If you have a warm skin tone, try to stick to warm shades; these will complement your overall skin better. Cool skin tones should stick to cooler shades, as again, these will look better against your skin undertone. If you are neutral in tone, then you are able to wear both warm and cool eyeshadows.

I would absolutely encourage you to play with the makeup and see which colours bring out the best in you, so do try out warm and cool tones on the eyes.

DIY Wedding Day Makeup

Before I start applying eyeshadow, I always prep the eyelid with a primer. My product of choice is the MAC Paint Pot in either Soft Ochre or Painterly, depending on the colours I will be applying on top. As this is drying down, I will use an ivory eyeshadow to set it in place, ready for the eyeshadow to be used on top.

When it comes to eyeliner, my go-to gel is the Illamasqua Precision Gel Liner. Not only does this product set and stay put, it is also quite black. If you are more of a pencil eyeliner person, my absolute favourite is the Max Factor Khol Brown 030. I think this pencil is super easy to use, and brown makes it very flattering for the eyes as it is not too intense.

For brows, a staple in the kit is Laura Mercier Brow Pencil, Top Tip: blonde looks amazing on light brown to brunettes. If you do not feel very confident filling in your brows with a pencil, a great alternative is the Benefit Gimme Brow Gel.

For your base, you may decide you want a little bit of extra dewiness or glow. In that case, I would recommend applying a thin layer of Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow after your moisturiser has settled in; alternatively, you could mix a small amount into your foundation.

You may be wondering about primers. Well,  to tell you the truth, I only use a primer on clients if they have oily or combination skin. If this is you, then I can highly recommend the following two trusted primers:

Foundation is going to be a huge factor in how well your makeup lasts during the day. You need to select a product that is suitable for your skin type, i.e., oily, combination, or dry. Here are a few of my favourite current and past foundations to use for bridal makeup:

If you are looking for foundation tips and a way to help you to decide what type of coverage you would like, check out The Foundation Tips You Need To Know post.

You will want to use concealer under the eyes and for any areas of the face where the foundation may not have given complete coverage. Here are my top and most trusted concealers;

After the application of foundation and concealer, you can start to look one-dimensional so I like to use bronzer and blush to bring some shape and life back to the skin. Here are my favourite bronzers;

When it comes to blush you want it to enhance your skin tone and give you a complementary flush of colour, it needs to be in harmony with your skin.

As a guide these are the shades you should be considering;

  • Fair Skin - Baby pink, Peach, Light Coral, Plum

  • Medium Skin - Apricot, Peach, Berry, Rich Pink

  • Olive Skin - Warm Peach, Rose, Bronze

  • Dark Skin - Brick Red, Berry, Plum, Tangerine

Before moving on to the lips I like to use a setting spray over the makeup, for oily and combination skins set areas of the face beforehand with a small amount of powder where you are likely to get shine.

Lipstick is a must-have to finish off the look. If you are worried about getting your colour to stay in place, grab yourself a bottle of Lipcote, which is a lip sealant. It is absolutely brilliant and one of my kit secrets.
