18 Common Mistakes When Doing Your Wedding Makeup

Common Mistakes To Avoid With Your Wedding Makeup

Deciding to do your wedding makeup is a big deal; it is not the same as your day-to-day routine.

A lot more thought and effort has to go into your product selection, application, and the way you finish your makeup for long wear.

It is easy to assume that makeup is just makeup, but when it comes to your wedding, it isn’t. This is why professional makeup artists charge for what they do; there is a lot of skill and knowledge that goes into it.

If you are dead set on doing your makeup, then these pointers will help you avoid mistakes that could ruin your look and professional photographs.

  1. Not pre-planning the makeup you will be using on the day

You will want to think about the style of makeup you would like to achieve for your wedding; do not go into the day with no idea and just see how it goes. This will lead to panic and disaster.

  2. Not doing a couple of practice runs

A trial run is crucial so you can try out any new products you may have purchased to see how they settle on the skin. This will give you an idea of how you need to adjust your makeup to get a better look and finish. You will also want to see how the look will come together for the big day; this will alleviate any stress, uncertainty, and feelings of being overwhelmed.

  3. Changing your style of makeup for your wedding day

It is easy to get carried away with different wedding looks, particularly the makeup trends of the moment. For your wedding, you want to stick to what you already love about your style but find new ways to incorporate something a little different to enhance your look. Do not be tempted to completely change your style; the last thing you want is to not feel like yourself and look back at your photos and feel like you look so different.

  4. Not layering your products in thin layers

When applying your makeup, you need to be mindful that everything works better in thin layers. It may seem time-consuming to layer the products, but trust me, the makeup will look so much better and last longer. You want to avoid makeup that looks heavy and, in some cases, heavy.

  5. Using too much foundation

Do not be tempted to apply too much foundation; less is more. If you need to build coverage, then apply in layers, but be sure to buff the first layer into the skin well. You will be able to create a more natural look by taking your time with foundation and using less than you think you need. Be mindful of how much product you put on your brush or sponge.

  6. Wearing the wrong foundation shade

It is important to select the right shade for your skin tone and skin undertones. If you are naturally cool in your undertone, look for a foundation that leans more on the pink side; a yellow-based foundation will look completely off and will be obvious to the eye, let alone the camera. This also works in reverse; if you have a warm undertone, select a yellow-based foundation as opposed to pink, which again will look completely off to the eye. The best way to match your foundation shade is to your chest; if you match your face, the chances are your body and face will mismatch.

  7. Not bringing your foundation down your neck

Our neck tends to be a lot paler than our face and chest; when you apply your foundation, be sure to bring some of the product down the neck. The last thing you want is to create the illusion that you have a floating head.

  8. Using too much blush

Wearing blush is an absolute must; however, be careful how much you apply. Layer the blush gradually to build the flush you want on the cheeks without being too overwhelming. Some powder blushers can be strong in pigmentation, and as a result, the brush being used can pick up too much product. Knock off any excess blush on your hand, and lightly dust the brush across your cheeks.

  9. Being too dramatic with your eyes

Defining your eyes is key to any bridal look, but being overdramatic is a no. Your wedding makeup should be in sync with all the shades and placement of the product; creating a strong and dramatic eye will only draw attention to that one area. You want your makeup to look and feel balanced.

  10. Not taking the time to blend your makeup

You want to slow it down when it comes to applying your makeup. Be careful with your application process; you want to blend everything you do well. If you think you are done blending, blend some more. Taking the time to blend everything will take your makeup from OK to amazing. Blending will help to create a more flawless and smooth finish.

  11. Practising your routine in a coloured top

Wearing a colour top will change the way your makeup looks. Random, but true. The best colour top to select would be white, cream, or ivory. This way, it will give you a better idea of how your makeup will look when you are in your wedding dress.

  12. Using a glittery highlighter

Highlighter seems to be a must-have product to bring a natural radiant glow to the skin in different lighting conditions; just be mindful that the product you use does not appear more glittery. Cameras are very sensitive to light and will pick up on the highlighter, so the last thing you want is for your highlighter to be obvious and stand out too much. You want your highlighter to be skin-like.

  13. Ignoring long-wear products

Do not underestimate the powder of long-wear makeup. Everything you do with your routine will be vital to how well it lasts. Key things to look out for are long-wearing foundations, long-wearing lipsticks, an eyeshadow base that you can use before powder eyeshadows, and investing in a setting spray.

  14. Not setting your makeup with powder and a setting spray

One of the key tips to helping your makeup last is to lightly set it with powder to sandwich the layers applied. Finish off the whole look with a setting spray, which will help diffuse any powder products so they become undetectable and help the overall look stay in place.

  15. Changing your skincare routine too close to the wedding

Whether you already have a skincare routine in place or are looking to start one, it is important to change the routine a few months in advance of the wedding day. It is difficult to know how your skin will react to and settle with new products, so you want to give yourself time to adjust to allow you to make any changes necessary.

  16. Not prepping your skin with the right skincare products

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is not prepping your skin with skincare products. Makeup does not apply well or last well on unprepared skin. You must moisturise beforehand to help keep dehydrated, parched, and dry patches at bay. If you have oily or combination skin, do not be tempted to skip skincare; it is hugely important for everyone. Use skincare that is created for your skin type.

  17. Not tailoring the makeup products to your skin type

If you have oily skin, you will want to look for an oil-free foundation. This will help with how your face produces natural oils and will not add too much extra to your skin. For combination and dry skin, look for a hydrating foundation that, in some cases, has hyaluronic acid added to the ingredients.

  18. Not using the right makeup tools

Invest in the right brushes to create a beautiful look and finish. Just making do with old brushes is not going to cut it, especially if they are falling apart or have not held their shape well. Creating lovely makeup is not just about skin prep and the products you use; it comes down to how you apply them and what you use to apply them.
